linux software to read and write NTFS formatted partitions. - Linux Software

IconsPage/IconSambaShares.png NTFS (New Technology File System) is a file system developed by Microsoft and used by Windows computers (Windows 2000 and later). Until 2007, linux was not able to write to this type of filesystem, it could only read from it. The stable ntfs-3g driver now allows linux systems to read and write NTFS formatted partitions.

Installation

Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) and Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)

The ntfs-3g packages comes pre-installed with the newest versions of Ubuntu, but you still need to install ntfs-config if you want the GUI configuration tool. You can search for "ntfs-config" in Synaptic or install via terminal:

sudo apt-get install ntfs-config

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: Indians Fighting In Swat - General

Written by www.daily.pk
Friday, 22 May 2009 00:00

Warning: Explicit & Disturbing Pictures Pictures below contain nudity and are gruesome.

Please do not proceed beyond the written description if such material is offensive to you.

Pictures of Uzbek and Gurkhas non-Muslim militants killed during the Pakistani military sweep of the Swat Valley.  These exclusive pictures show that they are uncircumcised. Their facial features prove they could be Gurkha fighters whom the Indian and the British militaries use to fight in mountainous regions.  The Americans have also hired some of them. The pictures also show that some of theses killed terrorists could be Uzbeks from Abdul Rasheed Dostom’s murderous militias in Afghanistan that are allied with the U.S. occupation army and Kabul’s puppet government.

The question that arises here is this: Why is the Pakistani military’s media arm, the ISPR, not releasing these pictures to the Pakistani media? This is the biggest proof that Indians are not only sending trained butchers and terrorists from Afghanistan disguised as Taliban to kill Pakistanis, but there are actual Indians fighting within the ranks of this so-called Pakistani Taliban in Swat?

Is the Pakistani military afraid of the pro-U.S. government in Islamabad and does not want to cross the line? It is the responsibility of Mr. Rehman Malik, the Federal Interior Minister, to bring such evidence to the notice of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Foreign Minister so that the elected government could raise this issue with the United States and NATO and take a stand on the reason why these supposed allies of Pakistan are letting Afghanistan be used as a base for anti-Pakistan activities, especially by the Indians and their paid agents in the Kabul government.  So why is this not happening? And why is Pakistan letting the United States and its allied government in Islamabad get away with the murder of Pakistanis at the hands of terrorists sent from Afghanistan? Sony Ericsson confirm Android v2.0 handset in the works - Phones

It's hardly going to surprise too many people but when Sony Ericsson officially confirm that their handsets, running on the v2.0 of the Android OS are in the works it is enough to make it in the news.

On a Sony Ericsson event in Taiwan, the company's vice president of marketing, Peter Ang has stated that the company is now investing more in the development of an Android smartphone than in the other mobile operational systems that the company uses (Symbian and Android that is).

The good news is that the Sony Ericsson Android handset will come spiced with the company's proprietary UI which we really dig. It does look pretty nicely over Symbian on the Idou, so we are now eager to see how it combines with the Android OS.

While a release date would have been sweet to know, Peter Ang has refrained from commenting on that. Considering that Android v2.0 codenamed Donut is the Android OS of choice for Sony Ericsson (along with Acer and Motorola) we can't really see any devices coming out before the last quarter of the year.

Broadband to have positive impact on people’s socio-economic status - Telecom

KARACHI: Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Dr Mohammed Yaseen has said that broadband services have potential to revolt the means of information and communication in all spheres of life, impacting positively on the socio-economic status of the masses.

Speaking as a chief guest at Connect Conference 2009 on Wednesday, Dr Yaseen said the telecom regulator has taken a number of key initiatives for the upbringing of broadband with rapid pace in the country. He stressed the need to create awareness of technology in users for its speedy penetration that would widen the customers’ base and reduce the rate of services after emergence of quality conscious competitors.

“PTA is facilitating growth of various telecom services including broadband particularly new entrants like Telecard and Wi-tribe that are preparing to launch Wimax Broadband services in the market,” PTA chairman added.

Dr Yaseen said that PTA has also formed a Broadband Stakeholders Group to enhance industry coordination and the promotion of broadband services, urging operators also for effective awareness and marketing campaign in a move to attract new users. He reiterated the protection of sector’s consumers to be ensured in all possible ways by the authority particularly reduction in General Sales Tax and import duties on telephony services on priority. The watchdog is also working deliberately to revive the failing revenues by users that would also pave the way for the inflow of handsome foreign direct investment (FDI) in the telecom sector, he further said.

He also mentioned authority’s recent achievements of the sector including Mobile Number Portability having 0.4 million ported subscribers, new SIM verification system, AJ&K licencing, installation of 349 Rabta Ghar Rural Telephony, Grey Traffic Monitoring and provisioning of free dial-up services. Dr Yaseen said the socio-economic impact of telecommunication sector has been found encouraging by the regulator’s study whereas surveys on other various aspects of telecom sector are underway.

PTA ends PTCL’s Internet bandwidth monopoly - Telecom

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) has decided to allow the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and DSL operators to buy Internet bandwidth from backbone operators other than the PTCL, thus settling a two-year row of the ISPs versus the PTCL.

The ISPs have been complaining to the PTA to amend their DSL Interconnect Agreement with the PTCL signed a few years ago in which the ISPs were restricted to procure Internet bandwidth from the PTCL only. Since the telecom deregulation in 2004, new operators have laid their infrastructure nationally as well as internationally and two years back, second alternate backbone provider, the TWA, started its services in the country.

But the DSL operators, who are the major purchaser of Internet bandwidth, were restrained by their unilateral agreement with the PTCL not to buy bandwidth from any operator other than the PTCL. The ISPs have been complaining to the PTA time and again against this monopolistic and anti-competitive restriction that did not allow them to have redundancy and benefit of competitive prices from alternate operator.

The PTA, after a series of negotiations, has finally issued the minutes of the meeting held between the ISPAK (Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan) and the PTCL on 5th May 2009 in which it was decided that the ISPs will be free to buy Internet bandwidth from third party operators and would be allowed to link their optical fibre cable to one PTCL exchange per city. The PTA has also decided that the PTCL will not increase charges of its leased circuits used by the DSL operators for inter-exchange bandwidth only for the next year.

The PTA has reserved a judgment on settling the DSL wholesale and retail prices of the PTCL and committed to resolve this long outstanding issue within a month. Pakistan has come a long way from the early days of Internet in 1990s with only one submarine cable connecting the country with rest of the world. The country today has three submarine cables linking Karachi with Southeast Asia, Europe and North America named as SWM3, SMW4 and TWA, first two with the PTCL and the third with a private operator. The total Internet bandwidth to the country stands at around 18 gigabytes, growing at around 45% every year for the last three years.
